GW GROUNDS & GATEWAY COMMITTEE

The GW Grounds and Community Gateway Committee was formed in 2007 with the mission of improving our school’s landscape and bringing our community together while creating an inviting atmosphere for our school.  The Grounds Committee leads efforts to renovate perennial plantings around the school, and plant, survey, and care for the 171 campus trees.

What kinds of activities are available?

Twice a month during the school year (weather permitting), GW students assigned to Community Service Saturdays and led by parent volunteers help plant bulbs and perennials, pull weeds, add mulch, and do general garden cleanup around the building.  SEE SCHEDULE BELOW*

Every April, the committee organizes the annual Spring Tree Planting, a fun and relaxed school- and community-wide event that brings together students, parents, teachers, and GW alums.  37 new trees have been added to the campus in the past three years.

The committee’s most ambitious project to date is the GW Community Gateway Project, a plan to overhaul GW’s north entrance. Originally designed as the delivery entrance, the north side next to the parking lot, is the one used by most students and their families, as well as virtually all visitors to our school.  Our school deserves a safer, more welcoming entrance.  Complete plans to improve the area have been created by talented parents and alums and approved by DPS.  To learn more and see the plans, go to www.georgedps.org and click on “Gateway Project” in the top bar.

How can I get involved?
