Library
Here at Ad Astra, we are very fortunate to have a new school library, which was officially opened in October 2010 by the Mayor of Poole.
We have over 4500 books in our library collection, consisting of both fiction and information books suitable for all pupils. Many of these are newly purchased from funds provided by the Friends of Ad Astra (PTA). Most books are available for pupils to borrow and take home and all classes, from Reception to Year 3, visit the library once a week to exchange their books and browse the shelves.
From Spring 2011, it is our aim to increase our library opening hours by introducing lunchtime opening so pupils can exchange their books, and by opening after school to allow pupils and their parents or carers to visit the library together.
The library is open throughout the school day and is used by staff for teaching, small group work or for story time. Older pupils are taught the basic library and information skills required to enable them to use the library resources independently to research topics being studied in class.
Pupils are encouraged to enjoy and contribute to the school library by making suggestions for new books, completing book reviews for display and by exploring its contents at every opportunity!
