Newsletter - January 5th 2011

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year! We hope that you have had a lovely Christmas. We are looking forward to a fun and rewarding 2011.

Curriculum

We aim to plan an exciting and stimulating curriculum for your children with a lot of the work linking together in topics or themes. This makes the learning more meaningful for your children as they can make links between subjects. You have the details of your child’s curriculum in the ‘Booklet for Parents’ which you received at the beginning of the school year (or in the reception parent’s pack) – this is a useful reference throughout the year and will help you to help your child. There is also a link to this booklet through the website: www.laneend.stockport.sch.uk. Knowing your child’s theme should help you talk to them about their work.  Sometimes there is just one main theme for a term and sometimes more. The themes for this term are listed below:

Class

Theme

Reception

Teddies and Toys

1

Homes and Materials

2

The Seaside – past and present

Babies

3

Keeping Healthy

Weather Around the World

4

Energy and the Environment

5

The Romans (Invaders and Settlers)

6

Animal Classification and Rights, In the News and Challenges

Thank you for supporting your child at home, it really does make a tremendous difference to their education. Children should be reading each night and completing their homework on time. Please also remember to regularly log on to the VLE and Mathletics to get the most out of the online learning tools available to your child.

Illness

There has been a lot of flu around recently and Stockport Council have sent the following advice to all schools over the holidays: –

Over the Christmas period we have been monitoring flu activity in Greater Manchester which is increasing and we have seen a number of cases where children have been admitted to intensive care.

Please note the following key messages:

  • If your child is unwell with flu like signs or symptoms (fever, cough, aching body) they need to be kept off school for 48 hours until all the symptoms have gone. Parents/ carers should ring their GP or NHS Direct for medical advice.
  • Children who are at risk – i.e. those with chronic lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, chronic neurological conditions, immune suppressed, diabetic and those without a spleen – parents are strongly advised to take their children to their GP to be vaccinated.
  • The message on infection control is still Catch it, Bin it, Kill it and wash hands frequently.

Clubs

The only club on this week is Gymnastics. There are no other clubs on this week. Grassroots Multi-skills and Grassroots Football will be starting next week. Mini Tennis starts next week on January 14th. Country Dancing, Football and Netball club start next week (continuing from last term). Unfortunately Mrs White could only run French club for the Autumn Term and so it finished before Christmas. A letter about further clubs on offer this term and start dates etc. will be coming home soon.
