Chestnut Class - Year 1

Welcome to Chestnut Class!

In Chestnut Class there are 28 children and 2 teachers.

Mrs G Thomas works on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs H Jones works on Thursday and Friday.

Term 3

Happy New Year! we hope you all had a good Christmas.

Our topic for term 3 and 4 is 'Walking with Dinosaurs'. Please see our curriculum section to see what the children are learning this term.

We are hoping to go on two trips in this term and term 4. The first to Bristol University Botanic Gardens. The children will be able to learn more about growing plants to support their learning in school. The second to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The museum has a section on dinosaurs, including the best preserved dinosaur found in Britain - the Scelidosaurus.

Reading

We will read with your child at a minimum once a week. When we hear your child read we will support them in changing their books. The children will take two books home each week.

Please read as much as possible with your child at home, it supports their learning in school. When you hear your child read we would appreciate your comments in their reading diary.

We would appreciate it if children could keep their books and reading diary in a book bag and bring it to school every day.

When the children are confident at reading and are above reading level 8 they will take part in a guided reading group once a week. This focuses on reading comprehension.

Phonic teaching / Spellings

This term children in Chestnut and Ash class have been split into phonic groups. This is to ensure that all of the children's needs are being met. Children will continue to take part in a phonics group for 25 minutes everyday. Phonics is very important in helping the children to read and write.

Mrs Thomas/Jones will be teaching a Phase 5 group, Mr Suter a Phase 3 group and Mrs Jama a Phase 2 group.

Each group will get their own set of spellings each week. The first set will be sent out in week 2. Spellings will go out on a Monday and teachers will see how well the children know them on a Friday.

PE - Term 3

PE will be on a Thursday afternoon for the first few weeks and then will swap to a Wednesday afternoon. This term it is Gymnastics. We have an instructor coming in from the Bristol Academy to work with the teachers and children. The children will need shorts and a t-shirt. Please make sure all PE kit is named.

Water bottles

It is important for the children to drink water in school. It keeps them hydrated and makes them ready to learn. Please provide your child with a named water bottle which they can bring to school every day or leave in school. The children are only able to drink water in the classroom.

Jumpers

Please make sure that your child’s name is in all of their jumpers. We ask the children to put their jumpers in the drawers or on their pegs but often they forget and jumpers get lost. Jumpers with names in are a lot easier to find.

Parent support

We really appreciate your support in the classroom. If you have any time to spare and would like to help in the classroom please let us know.

If you would like to come along and help on any of the trips please let Mrs Thomas or Mrs Jones know.
