School Year 2012 - 2013

Ye - Ha!

In Spring term Year 4 performed the musical ‘Ye – Ha’. It was set in the Wild West and based on the life of the town baddy and his gang who were searching for gold under the town. The performance included acting, singing and dancing. All the children in the year group took part. Year 4 had a dress rehearsal in front of KS2 and then performed it in front of their parents. It was a great success and was enjoyed by the performers and the audience.

Science Day

The children and the staff had an amazing day being ‘Inventors’ and creating a squirrel proof bird feeder. The children investigated the materials they could use for their bird feeders. They then planned what there bird feeders would look like and included detailed instructions on how to make their bird feeders. Lastly, they made their bird feeders using the materials they had tested. The children were completely focused for the day and they all produced something that they should be proud of.

Volcano Investigation Day

On Friday 11th January Year 4 took part in a topic day.  An area in Year 4 was transformed into a volcanic crime scene, which the children had to solve.  The local Police Community Support Officer was called into school to talk to the children about solving the crime scene investigation.  Children wore suits, masks and gloves to explore the crime scene and gather evidence to solve the crime.  Children were also given the opportunity to explore volcanoes around the world using treasure boxes, laptops and information books.

In Literacy this week Year 4 have recorded their news report about the volcanic eruption at Beechwood, using the new media equipment.

Roman Day

This term we have been learning about Romans. To enhance their learning we took part in a Roman day, whereby the children and the adults in Year 4 dressed as Romans and followed a ‘Roman life’ for the day. The activities the children were involved in were:

Cooking of a Roman Cheesecake, Roman numerals, Roman alphabet and a Roman visitor.

As part of our lessons, the children researched the houses that Roman and Celt people lived in. From that research, the children made their own Roman house and Celt house.

Black History - Martin Luther King.

In Year 4, the children have been learning about Martin Luther King as part of Black History Month. They have completed various pieces of work that included research, fact files, letters and speeches. The children shared their work in a special assembly and enjoyed taking part in discussions about his life, beliefs and work.

School Year 2011 - 2012

Beechwood Musicians

In March three pupils from Year 4 represented the school, participating in a Woodwind performance at Challney High School for Boys. Rahma Ahmad (Flute), Iba Raza and Sahil Miah (Clarinet) have regular music lessons at school and were invited to take part in a borough event.  The children had a fantastic afternoon and enjoyed performing in front of an audience.

Roman Day

On Friday 25th November Year 4 had a Roman Day. Everyone came dressed as Roman soldiers or emperors in their togas, even the teachers dressed up!

Throughout the day there was a variety of activities for us to participate in. Roman numeracy and literacy lessons, mosaic making, Roman cooking and finally a real Roman artefact workshop. The historian who presented the workshop showed us how to make coins, how to thread Roman style and play traditional Roman games.

In the kitchen we made some Roman soup. We used potatoes, carrots and parsnips. First we peeled the vegetables, then cut them into small chunks and cooked them in stock. Surprisingly it was delicious.

It was a great day.
