Eden Goes Green

Eden College has a rich history of eco-friendly activities and has been an Eco-School for a number of years. Mrs Jean van Elden has been the prime motivator and earth-child on the staff. Under her organisation and guidance the school has embarked on a number of projects - to name a few:

  • Harvesting rainwater off the Prep School roof
  • Permaculture gardening area
  • Recycling stations and the actual physical recycling of those stations
  • Mondi Recycling Station for paper
  • Worm farm
  • Fresh Fest (major Green Fair) organised with hundreds of visitors

Eden are active members of Besoc (the Bluff Environmental Society) This society is our service provider and collects recycling from us weekly. The children have a dynamic recycling drive where points are given for separated waste.Teachers collect the recycling on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The College CareCom students have voluteered to assist in this collection process.Eden also involve themselves in the varied activities Besoc offers . They have entered the Anti litter banner competition, they attended the Arbour Day Tree Planting ceremony,Entered the Annual Eco -Quiz and are once again getting involved in the upcycle challenge. Our matric dance was completely recycled and donated to Besoc for  their Annual Besoc Fundraiser Dinner.

At our school we observe 'No Power Hour' and join in with the Annual International Beach Clean Up  in September.

Teachers include environmental issues in their teaching material and being green is very much in the hearts of all students and staff.

The Green Fest included numerous competitions for Durban schools to create green Awareness. There were Eco- challenges, public speaking competitions,an eco quiz and environmental games. There were also talks and demonstrations for adults, eco friendly shows and a green flea market.

The drama department produced a show about eating free range and organic chicken that was staged at the Durban Botanic Gardens and at schools in Cape Town that are linked to Eden through our Afritwin project.

Eden receives Gold Eco-Schools status!

Eden Durban has recently been awarded its Gold Eco-Schools status! This is an outstanding achievement and one of which we are very proud. This is no mean feat and is reward for our hard work done in implementing a great environmental management process at our school, including our recycling programme, our Eco-Committee and our Green Fest. Many thanks to Mrs Van Elden and Mrs Mazzoni, our teachers, kids and parents who are all working to creating awareness and to sustaining our healthy eco-friendly environment.
