Mrs Cunningham

Year 1

Welcome to Puffin Class!!

Puffin class is one of the Year 1 classes and is taught by Mrs Cunningham with support from Mrs Fox.  If you walk past our door you will often hear us singing lots of songs.

In Year 1, our aim is to provide a smooth transition from the Early Years to Key Stage 1.  We provide fun and engaging learning opportunities to develop children's knowledge, understanding and independence.  This is made possible through topic based learning.

Our topic this term is 'Beside the Seaside'.  We are enjoying finding out about seaside towns in the UK including what they are like now and what they were like in the past.  We have made some fish/boat mosaics that look stunning on our classroom display.

Our daily phonics sessions follow the Read Write Inc. Programme. During these sessions children learn the relationship between letters and sounds and secure the foundations for successful reading, writing and spelling.  Our puppet ‘Fred the Frog’ helps us to speak in pure sounds to improve our phonics.

We like to use the ICT suite on a Friday morning. We are very lucky to have one computer per child so we can practice our computer skills effectively.

PE:  Puffin class has PE on a Monday and Wednesday. PE kits should consist of shorts, t-shirt, and in the summer term trainers or plimsolls and a jumper/top.   However please ensure PE kits are in school for the whole week as we sometimes have sporting events/coaching visits on other days where sports kit will be needed. We enjoy the fun warm ups that help prepare us for the lesson. In dance we have fun moving to the music with the BBC Time to Move programmes.

Homework:  Our homework in year 1 currently consists of Reading and Learning Logs. Children are expected to read at home and when they are ready to change their books they place them in the book box in their classrooms. Learning Log homework goes out on a Friday and is due back in the following Thursday..

Mrs Cunningham loves gardening and we are busy planting in the new Roecroft Garden. So far we have planted lots of potatoes and some aromatic herbs. We are looking forward to enjoying eating our new potatoes later on in the term!
