School Council
The School Council is composed of 2 representatives from Year 1 to Year 6.
The Year 6 representatives are the Head Boy and Head Girl who are elected by pupils and staff following the Year 6 Democracy week at the beginning of the autumn term. During this week prospective candidates for the posts are nominated by their peers in Year 6, who then form canvasing parties to promote their candidates to the rest of the school. This includes the candidates making key note speeches in assembly to the rest of the school, as well as canvassing other pupils over break and lunch times. In recent years candidates have even made origami ‘frogs’, stickers and paper aeroplanes, as well as the usual posters and flyers to promote their ideas across the school. Everyone in the school then has one vote for the Head boy and girl which they make on ballot papers bearing the photograph of the candidate.
During the first week of term all other classes invite prospective school council reps to give a speech to the class explaining how they will represent their views on the school council. Each class then has a secret ballot or blind count to choose their reps.
The school council meets at least monthly, but more often fortnightly and considers all aspects of school life. In the last 12 months they have been involved in interviewing prospective teachers, sampled new meals for school lunches, decided on spending priorities to improve the school grounds, chosen our Charities of the year and organised several fund raising activities. They also regularly discuss school issues and factors affecting teaching and learning.

Tiny Lives
The children and their families at Coxhoe Primary School are fantastic at fundraising for our school and other really worthwhile charities. Last year, they raised over £300 for 'Help for Heroes'. The School Council are working with the children at the moment to choose the charity for this new year. Mrs Bartle has asked them to consider raising money for the two local hospitals (RVI and James Cook) that specialise in supporting babies who are born very very early. This is because some members of staff have family members who received support from these fantastic teams. A special visitor came to assembly last week to help Mrs Bartle explain how this charity does amazing work. Jonah was born in November 2011 at just 27 weeks and weighed only 2lb 2oz. He had an emergency operation when he was only hours old and continued his battle for months. He eventually made it home in February this year. He was full of smiles for the children and it's a real pleasure to see him now free of his oxygen tubes. Mrs Bartle would like our school to help these charities continue their fantastic work. The School Council will now work with the children to decide if this a cause they wish to support.
