Our Curriculum

Literacy

English is a vital way of communicating in school, in public life and internationally. It enables children to learn how to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. In studying English pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing (including punctuation and grammar) spelling and handwriting. Where possible these skills are developed through linking the teaching of English with other curriculum areas, for example making biscuits in DT would link well with instruction writing in literacy. From Yr 1 onwards children have a daily ‘literacy hour’ based on the renewed literacy framework.

Core Learning in Literacy by Year

Numeracy

In maths teaching we aim to equip pupils with tools such as logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Throughout the school we teach the following areas of study; using and applying maths, number and algebra, shape space and measures and data handling. From Year 1 onwards children have a daily numeracy session based on the renewed Numeracy framework and the Abacus Evolve scheme of work.

Creative Curriculum

At Collingbourne CE Primary School we aim to interest and excite children with a well planned, broad, balanced, rich and vibrant curriculum, enabling them to develop confidence in themselves as independent, enthusiastic life-long learners.

We believe that children respond best when they enjoy ownership of their learning, when learning experiences are connected, relevant and achieved through practical, purposeful active learning every day.

We used the Chris Quigley’s Key Skills resource to ensure we incorporated all requirements of the National Curriculum within our own Creative Curriculum

for skills progression in subjects other than English, Mathematics, PSHE and Religious Education.

These skills have been mapped over a 2 year rolling plan to ensure that the needs of mixed aged classes are met and that previous learning is taken into account when moving forward through the school, allowing both consolidation and extension of learning. The whole school, with the exception of Fox class, share the same topic titles over the year, however in order to cover the appropriate skills and incorporate the interests of the children in each of our classes their focuses will be very different. These topics will be regularly reviewed to ensure they remain current and relevant, allowing for memorable events such as the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

Fox Class

Fox Class is made up of mainly children who are in their Reception year and therefor need to be taught in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage, with a focus on play base, hands on activities and child initiated learning. The curriculum is supported and assessed against the Development Matters documents, which is available at: https://www.education.gov.uk/publications/eOrderingDownload/Development-Matters.pdf

Great emphasis is placed upon the children’s interests, with the children often choosing the themes or topics we study.

The Year 1 children within Fox class continue to learn the same key skills as the Year 1 children in Hedgehog class wherever appropriate, however this will often be done through different topics.

PSHE

We hold the health, wellbeing and personal development of the children in our care as one of our highest priorities. Our aim is to support our pupils in becoming whole and rounded individuals. We also recognise that physical and emotional health forms the essential foundation for successful learning.

To support us in providing effective PSHE we use the Wiltshire scheme of work Learn 4 Life which incorporates the SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) programme.

Religions Education

At Collingbourne CE Primry School, we use the Wiltshire’s Agreed Syllabus.
