Social Networking

Is 9 years old old enough to have a Facebook page? Are you old enough at 10? The answer to this question is, no. You have to be 13 years old to have a page on this site. The people who run Facebook have a set of rules that you must agree to when you sign up. If you are under 13 and have a page you are breaking these rules.

Programs like Facebook and Mushy Monsters are called social networking sites. These are places you can go to chat to other people over the Internet. Let me ask you a question. Do you talk to strangers in the street? No? So how do you know that the person you are chatting to is actually who they say they are. People often tell fibs over the Internet. Here are our tips for being safe online.

Super Safe Surfing - Top Tips

Always let a grown-up know you are going to use the Internet.

Never tell anyone on the Internet your address or your phone number.

Never tell anyone where you go to school.

Never use your real name in a virtual world.

Have a fun nickname and don't use a picture of yourself.

You can’t always believe someone is who they say they are, even if they send you a photograph.

Never arrange to meet someone you have made friends with on the Internet.

Never call anyone names or say mean things (this is called cyber-bullying).

Tell an adult is anyone is bullying you on the Internet.

Remember tell a grown up if you feel unhappy or frightened about anything.

In March we had the opportunity to enter a BE E-SAFE competition which was introduced by the Open Zone. The aim was to create a piece of artwork or a digital presentation showing how to be safe online. Louie Scott was our winner this year. He made a brilliant powerpoint presentation showing Do's and Dont's and won the KS2 Digital Arts catagory. Well done Louie!
